“Body mind masters take an easy, relaxed, progressive approach while working within the higher reaches of their comfort zone, thereby avoiding the burnout that accompanies a stressful approach to training.”
– Dan Millman
If there is one thing I wish I would have known when first starting out on my quest to attain a warrior’s physique… it would have been the secret of how to build muscle without killing yourself in the process! 😯
When you’re young you can get away with all types of brutal training and seemingly bounce back unscathed, yet in the end it will catch up with you. Therefore, I don’t recommend pushing yourself to the extreme and killing yourself in the gym. Instead, I suggest a more enlightened approach.
“What makes Superman a hero is not that he has power, but that he has the wisdom and the maturity to use that power wisely.”
– Christopher Reeve
Very few of us (okay none of us actually, except Superman) were born with Kryptonian DNA, which under the radiation of the Earth’s yellow sun bestow upon us superhuman powers making us virtually invulnerable to anything life may throw our way. No, unfortunately we weren’t blessed with the powers of superhuman strength, lightning speed, x-ray vision, heat vision, super breath or the ability to fly! We were, however, blessed with one power (that Christopher Reeve alluded to in his quote above) and that, my friend, is the power of CHOICE!
“Most of what we need to know about how to eat we already know, or once did until we allowed the nutrition experts and the advertisers to shake our confidence in common sense, tradition, the testimony of our senses, and the wisdom or our mothers and grandmothers.”
~ Michael Pollan
In this day and age humans are smarter and more intelligent than we’ve ever been in the past 200,000 years of our existence. As the dominant and sole survivors of the many hominid species that began emerging and evolving in Africa over 2 million years ago, humans today… Rule the Earth!!! It was our very intelligence that eventually led us away from our “primal” or caveman diet and on to agricultural, animal husbandry and newer methods of feeding ourselves. With the current health care crisis and dramatic rises in obesity and disease, some may wonder if our ‘modern food industries’ are a good thing after all!?
“Given enough time, any man may master the physical. With enough knowledge, any man may become wise. It is the true warrior who can master both….and surpass the result.”
– T’ien T’ai
So you’re interested in Warrior Training and developing the strength, courage and awe-inspiring physique of an Awakened Warrior! Good for you, my friend… and I sincerely mean that. In a world where “Most People” are slurping down super-sized, sugary soda drinks, wolfing down greasy, artery-clogging, factory-farmed beef burgers and spending most of their waking hours sitting on the couch watching TV or playing videos games….. you’re aspiring to achieve excellence by mastering your body and your mind.
“Dogs are our link to paradise. They don’t know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring–it was peace.”
– Milan Kundera
Today is my Soma Dawg’s twelfth birthday! She was born on March 6th, 2001 and has been howling, growling and chowing ever since! 😉 I can still remember the night my ex-girlfriend and I picked her up in the Tennessee Mountains. We were so excited to finally bring her home! She was only a 6 week old wolf pup with raccoon eyes, big paws and a waggling tail…. basically the cutest puppy in the world! She curled up in my lap as I drove us down the mountain and back to the city of High Point, North Carolina. Little did I know what I was getting myself into…
“You and I are all as much continuous with the physical universe as a wave is continuous with the ocean.”
– Alan Watts
The sheer magnitude of our universe is literally beyond all human comprehension. It’s hard to fathom, really… Even so, we’re doing our best to make sense of it all. Considering the grand scheme of this magnificent, mysterious macrocosm… Have you ever wondered if your life is of any real significance at all? Are we all just meaningless microbes floating in a sea of endless proportion? Or is there some deeper purpose to our existence here? Are we all ONE and connected… as many of our spiritual teachers have promised us? Or are we as separate and isolated as many of us dishearteningly feel? Inquiring minds want to know….
“All of us have been dying, hour by hour, since the moment we were born. Realizing this, let all things be placed in their proper perspective. . . Remember, it is always later than you think.”
– Og Mandino
So there I was car surfing on my friends sweet maroon, Toyota Camry when it became imminently clear that I was about to wipe the eff out!!! Okay, hold up! Let me back up a minute… it was Friday night and like most Friday nights back in the day, the four of us were starting the night out by “shoulder tapping!” This, if you don’t know, is getting someone to buy your underage ass some beer before they head into the store.
“We live in illusion and the appearance of things. There is a reality. We are that reality. When you understand this, you see that you are nothing, and being nothing, you are everything.”
Part of the reason why humans (and animals in general) survive and flourish is because they’ve learned to trust their instincts and their senses. Our ability to see, hear, taste, smell and touch allow us to gather information about the world and environment in which we have evolved. Our five senses are highly refined sensory receptors that are linked to our nervous system and hence brain.
“When one realizes one is asleep, at that moment one is already half-awake.”
– P.D. Ouspensky

“Every man who knows how to read has it in his power to magnify himself, to multiply the ways in which he exists, to make his life full, significant and interesting.”
In Part I of Rise of the Awakened Warriors, we learned that an Awakened Warrior is the integration of two archetypes… the Warrior and the Sage. These symbolic, archetypal roles lie dormant within the collective unconscious of humanity and therefore they also reside inside of you as well. They are simply waiting to be expressed!
