Shocking List of GMO Foods You May Not Know You’re Eating
“The FDA purposely does not require labeling of GMO food, since no one who understands the issue would ever purchase it. This makes it all the more difficult to locate healthful food.” – Byron J. Richards
Ever wonder how many products in your favorite grocery store contain GMO ingredients?
If you’re anything like the average consumer – then probably NOT! And that’s exactly how these corporate food conglomerates want to keep it.
The big marketing brains behind these companies know that you will be utterly shocked and repulsed to learn that MOST of the food products they are selling to you and your family are loaded with genetically modified ingredients; ingredients that have been banned in many other countries.
Genetically modified foods have rapidly and stealthily invaded the American market place. There’s a growing concern among educated consumers that GMO foods are NOT safe to eat. It’s imperative that we become more conscious of the foods we’re eating, where they come from and the long-term benefits associated with being GMO free.
In this post we will define the types of foods that contain GMOs. We will give you the information you need and give you a sample list of gmo foods to avoid. This will allow you to make better shopping decisions while at the grocery store.
What Foods Contain Genetically Modified Ingredients?
Here’s a Sample List of GMO Foods
Since more and more types of food are becoming genetically modified, making a comprehensive list that includes all products becomes increasingly difficult. The best approach is to buy MOST things organically.
However, that may be easier said than done depending on where you live. The other approach is limiting known foods that are usually Genetically Modified all together. This list contains commonly bought foods which people may NOT even realize contain GMO ingredients.
- Almost all candy
- Chocolate
- Cookies, chips, cheese puffs, or crackers
- Ice Cream
- Frozen Yogurt
- Baby Formula
- Soy meat, veggie burgers, veggie dogs, or most vegetarian processed substitute meat products including Tofu

This is just a sample list of foods that commonly contain GMOs. The full list of products would be a whole lot longer than this! 🙂 This shines light on how hard it’s getting to be GMO free these days. You have to be an ingredient list reader in order to avoid GMOs. So that leads us to the next topic.
What Are Some Common GMO Ingredients?
It’s great to know which foods are genetically modified so you can avoid them. However, it’s getting a little bit trickier knowing what products contain GMO ingredients inside of them.
With all these crazy big words on the back of the products’ ingredient list, how many of those words you can’t pronounce are actually a hidden GMO?
This list will shine some light on that question and provide you with some of the common GMO ingredients that you might NOT have realized were in the food you buy. Most of the items on this list will be GMO ingredients unless of course you bought the product organically.
If you like, you could save this image to your phone to take with you shopping. In case you want an easier approach than having to have this huge list, here are some tips for avoiding GMOs while at the grocery store.
- Avoid artificial sweeteners such as Aspartame or Nutrasweet.
- Do NOT buy anything NON-Organically that has Corn, Soybeans, Canola, Sugar (unless from cane sugar), Rapeseed, or Vegetable Oil in it.
- If you can’t pronounce the ingredient that is in question, most likely it is a GMO.
- Products with large list of ingredients commonly contain genetically modified organisms.
- Try to buy as many items as possible in their organic form.
- Look for the verified NON GMO label starting to show up on packages.
There’s your shocking list of common GMO ingredients in our foods. By NO means is that every single one out there, however it should help you understand the vastness of the GMO market.
Do Restaurants Use Genetically Modified Foods?
The sad truth is… if you are living in the US and you eat at fast foods (Which I hope not lol!) or even regular restaurants, than you are consuming genetically modified ingredients and GMO foods.
Unless the restaurant is using organic foods than the food they use is most likely tainted with GMO flavours. There are certain restaurants like, “Chipotle” that label GMO ingredients and strive to be GMO Free. Of course, some restaurants are worse than others.
Look for restaurants that serve fresh, local and organic foods whenever possible. Right now these type of restaurants are somewhat scarce, however when people start demanding quality foods in the restaurant marketplace, that is when you will see more of them appear.
Until the restaurants start using better quality food, you are mostly stuck with having to create your own healthy meals at home by buying the quality ingredients yourself. This is the safest way to be conscious on the type of foods you put inside your body.
Eliminating GMOs by Voting With Your Dollar
One of the best ways to contribute to a cause is by voting with your dollar. In today’s monetary environment, most businesses are motivated by profit when making decisions for the company. Therefore, it would work well boycotting products and businesses that use GMOs in their products’ or services’.
Once there’s a desire by the customers to want these products to be free of GMOs, than the business will start accommodating the customers’ wants. Those that don’t will find themselves OUT of business.
The problem is that most people don’t even know what a GMO is or the massive problems that they can have on people and the environment. It seems like education is really the first step.
Support Local Organic Farmers
One great way to make a difference with the boycott of GMOs in our environment is by supporting your local organic farmers.
The more demand there is for local organic foods the more farmers will work on supplying for that demand.
Besides the fact that it is non GMO, another great reason to buy local organic foods is because they are fresher. They didn’t have to make a trip around the world to get to your grocery store. They were from the farmer down the street.
Great places to check out if you are looking to buy local organic foods are stores like the Company Shops, Earth Fares, Farmers Markets, and even Whole Foods.
